The sustainable paper backpack: a must – have for everyone

It took 10 years for Rasuolė Jasnauskienė, a founder of Baby’s Nest, and her team to introduce a unique, heartfelt, and beloved product – the RBDT Exclusive unisex handbag. Initially called the Mom's Bag, it has since "grown up." But let us tell you the whole story from the beginning.

First: a baby cot made of paper

Rasuolė's company Prosapia was among the first in Lithuania to offer parents a popular international standard – a baby box that transforms into a crib. You might recall the extensive stories about this Scandinavian trend at the time; in Finland, the state gifts baby boxes to all new parents.

Over the decade, the world’s perspective on ecology, consumption, and sustainability has greatly evolved, but the Baby’s Nest boxes were ahead of their time from day one. According to Rasuolė, their baby nests were initially designed with sustainable cradles that convert an ordinary box into a cradle for a baby. As the baby grows, it becomes a toy box and later a convenient storage solution for the child's belongings. Furthermore, the Baby’s Nest can become a cherished keepsake, holding significant items from the child's early years – first shoes, first drawing, etc. It's like a life box for the child, where opening it brings back memories and stories from their childhood.

While assembling baby boxes, Rasuolė pondered that the box’s continuity could evolve into a practical, spacious handbag. The idea was crystallised by a coincidence.

Ten years ago, Rasuolė was visiting a fabric exhibition (then at the Litexpo hall) and was captivated by a stand displaying an intriguing, unseen fibre. It resembled both leather and paper, was lightweight yet durable, and very pleasing to the touch. What a fantastic mom's bag it would make if crafted from this fibre!

This thought has now become a reality.

The new banner of parents: sustainability

Sustainability has become the new banner for the new generation. If they liked the baby boxes that grow with the child, they would surely be impressed by the newly created RBDT Exclusive bag. These two products share the most eco-friendly material – paper. Sure, you might doubt whether paper symbolizes sustainability and how durable such a product can be, given the fragility of paper.

At this point we say, "stop," as both the paper Baby’s Nest and the paper RBDT Exclusive bag are almost everlasting. For example, the baby box is made from recycled, robust five-layer corrugated cardboard, rivalling the stability of wood.

The magical properties of the fibre

The paper fabric, the fibre that fascinated Rasuolė ten years ago, truly has magical properties. Let's go back to the past – when she saw this paper eco-fibre at the textile fair, she immediately started looking for manufacturers and learning more about the material. So, take note – this fibre can be washed at up to 60 degrees Celsius, spun in a washing machine, or dry-cleaned without any risk. The fibre, also known as vegan leather, resembles well-crafted leather that ages beautifully. “. Its crumpled paper-like appearance adds to its charm.Even after extended use, frequent washing, or traveling halfway around the world, the product remains stylish.

The fibre has another notable feature – it is almost weightless. At first glance, the bag might appear heavy, but its weight mainly comes from the zippers and hooks. The fibre itself is incredibly lightweight. That's very important when you're talking about someone who has a lot of stuff to carry around: a mom, a sporty teenager, or a student with a pile of textbooks.

Longevity comes not just from fibre

We’ve discussed the springs of the baby box, which enable the product to serve for a very long time. The Prosapia team followed the same policy when creating the new bag. The RBDT Exclusive bag is made to be highly durable, with the highest quality fastenings, hooks, zippers, and lining.

As the bag was being developed, increasingly more improvements were made, therefore, the original idea – the Mom's Bag – evolved beyond its "infant clothes" into a universal bag/backpack/tote and then into a unisex product suitable for everyone, from children to seniors. This product is for all of us.

According to the creators, if a mother buys the bag, she will quickly appreciate its convenience, as it has hooks that can be attached to both a pram with a bassinet and a stroller. If the bag owner takes it on a trip, the hooks will be perfect for attaching it to a suitcase. For an office worker, the bag will be convenient because it has a pocket for a laptop. This bag will also be indispensable for those who love picnics, sports, or go to school.

And, of course, the appearance

A product designed for long-term use must be beautiful today and in five years. Thus, the RBDT Exclusive bag was created according to classic principles, maintaining simplicity. The design is universal and easeful, with a chosen brown colour. It's not all made from scratch – market research was conducted, and a hundred respondents were surveyed before the production was launched. Brown was identified by consumers as the most comfortable and universal colour (black and moss green were also suggested). Based on respondents' preferences, the bag was refined until the best version was found. When respondents answered "NOTHING" to the question "what can be changed in the bag?", the production began.

This is not just a bag

The creators of the handbag say it's not just any bag. So much love has been put into its creation that this product will already be a talisman of good times for your family. Think about how many good thoughts and efforts are embedded in it. It is handcrafted with great love, considering every seam and detail. And most importantly – thinking about you, so that you feel comfortable, safe, and pleasant with this product.
